Our Projects

Client: Pro-Cathedral School Ltd, Urban Creation Ltd
Project: Enabling Works for Historic Building Conversion, Clifton, Bristol

Site Description: The historic Grade II listed Pro-Cathedral building and grounds in Clifton, Bristol, are supported by a masonry retaining wall up to 8m in height. Redevelopment of the site for residential and commercial use required the stability of the site and wall to be secured. Hydrock was responsible for the detailed design of ground anchors and a waling beam, and for all aspects of the construction. Hydrock undertook the complex job of installing ground anchors with working loads of up to 60 tonnes and construction of a 2m high reinforced concrete waling beam at the foot of the retaining wall. This enabled us to use our unique combination of geotechnical and structural design capabilities and specialist geotechnical contracting to deliver a complex project using in-house resources.

Services Provided: Principal contractor for enabling works; detailed design and construction of all aspects.

Outcome: Having originally secured the project through a competitive tender process with emphasis on quality and price, Hydrock maintained value engineering during the works to respond effectively to changes in ground conditions and ensure that these were dealt with effectively to minimise delays and ensure the quality of construction.
