Client: Urban Splash
Project: Geotechnical Ground Nailing, Hartcliffe, Bristol
Site Description: Urban Splash's redevelopment of the site of the former Imperial Tobacco Headquarters is a key part of Bristol City Council's plans for South Bristol's regeneration. Hydrock was required to carry out the detailed design and construction of an 8m high 175m long cut slope within the Lias Clay. The slope was split into three parts - two permanent sections inclined at 60 degrees and one temporary section at 75 degrees - and these were supported with over 800 soil nails and a flexible mesh facing. Inclined drains were also drilled into the lower part of the permanent slopes to provide permanent groundwater control, and over 11,000m3 of soil was excavated and removed from the site.
Services Provided: Full design and construct package including: Detailed design of all aspects of slope excavation and reinforcement; Top-down excavation of cutting slopes including the forming of temporary earthworks working platforms at various levels; Disposal off site of excavated material; Demolition of existing retaining walls, existing site infrastructure and a tunnel portal; Installation of soil nails using open hole rotary drilling techniques.
Outcome: Having originally secured the project through a competitive tender process with emphasis on quality and price, Hydrock maintained value engineering during the works to respond effectively to changes in ground conditions and ensure that these were dealt with effectively to minimise delays and ensure the quality of construction.
