Project: Nickolls Quarry, West Hythe, Kent.
Site Description: A 55 hectare former quarry and associated inert waste landfill, for development of up to 900 residential properties, a school, commercial/retail space and associated infrastructure.
Services Provided: Geotechnical and Remediation services including: desk top studies, ground investigation, works, site monitoring and instrumentation, human health risk assessment groundwater risk assessment, landfill gas risk assessment, regulatory liaison, waste management licence surrender, remedial works design, contract administration, geotechnical design, ground improvement/reclamation engineering, contractor selection.
Outcome: With limited time prior to purchase, key issues were assessed and a first phase of investigations carried out to identify the major geotechnical and environmental hazards and risks at the site, and to scope the likely remedial requirements. This targeted investigation was designed and implemented over a fixed eight week period of due diligence to allow initial regulatory consultations prior to Cofton taking an option on the site. Having proved the technical and commercial viability of the scheme, much down to an agreement to reduce the post closure monitoring period and bring forward sales receipts of the land, detailed site investigation & monitoring followed in Phase 2 to satisfy the regulators and obtain further information required to ensure surrender of the waste management licence.
