Client: Forestry Enterprise Commission
Project: Westbury Brook Mine Stabilisation, Forest of Dean
Site Description: Iron mining has been carried out in the Forest for more than 2000 years but was stopped here in the Westbury Brook Mine in 1893. Long term access needed to be maintained for bats into the mine through a steeply sloping shaft.
Services Provided: The work involved the clearance of the top of the slope shaft into the abandoned workings and construction of a steep steel roadway into the mines. This was followed by stabilisation of the collapsing shaft using shotcreting, steelwork and in situ construction of culverts.
Outcome: The works were completed in time for the bat hibernation period and within the budget set for the project. Funded by English Nature, the works will ensure the future continued use of the mine by a number of protected species of bats.
