Our safety culture
Safety is a fundamental part of our culture. Our exceptional approach to health and safety is demonstrated by the multiple number of Gold RoSPA awards we have received, while our Safety Management System is UKAS accredited to the OHSAS 18001 standard.
Our health and safety culture is embedded in everything we do and actively promoted at every opportunity. Whether on site or in the office, our objective is to safeguard employees, subcontractors, clients and the public. We’re proud of creating an enjoyable workplace and delivering work to the highest standards to our clients, who similarly embrace safety as a priority.
Safe people, safe site, safe home
Our approach to health and safety is brought to life through our ‘Safe People, Safe Site, Safe Home’ initiative.
Our people are the backbone of Hydrock’s success. For us, it’s imperative to look after people both professionally and physically, as individuals and as site teams. We want safety to be second nature to our people. We ensure that each and every person is properly briefed, supervised appropriately and completely understands how to carry out their tasks safely, correctly and efficiently.
Operating our sites at the highest levels of safety performance brings a responsibility to ensure safety is at the core of our site operations. We focus on five key areas: safe access and egress; safe place to work; safe systems of work; safe plant and equipment; and safe handling and storage.
Our Safety Management System is UKAS accredited to the OHSAS 18001 standard and underpins our works on site. The system is continually improved and updated as we improve our capabilities and set our standards ever higher. Measured against the construction industry as a whole, our accident incident rate is industry leading. As of April 2017 we had exceeded 1 million man hours worked without an accident as defined by the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR). This achievement was preceded by an accident free period of 2.6m hours as defined by RIDDOR.
The delivery of Hydrock’s health and safety standards is audited by Achilles and we repeatedly achieve a score of 98% and above. Currently, Hydrock has an overall score of 99% as of the most recent audit.
Being safe at Hydrock has one simple aim: to ensure that our people, and those who are affected by our activities, benefit from an incident-free environment and can return home safely each day.
As an endorsement of our commitment to health and safety, our ‘Safe Site, Safe People, Safe Home’ initiative has been shortlisted for the Ground Engineering Awards (Health & Safety) in 2014 and 2015, and the Construction News Specialist Awards (Health & Safety) in 2015.
Multiple Gold RoSPA awards
In 2017 we have achieved four Gold RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards, plus a prestigious Gold Medal for receiving Gold awards for five consecutive years. This brings our total since 2013 to 15 Gold awards.
The Gold Medal has been awarded to Hydrock Contracting for achieving Gold award status for five years running, endorsing its unrelenting commitment to health and safety throughout the business.
Of this year’s four Gold awards, two relate to major land remediation projects undertaken by our Contracting business: decontamination of an asbestos-impacted site at Camley Street, London; and works at Stoney Lane South, Christchurch where we carried out ground investigation and remediation of a former gasworks site.
Hydrock’s geo-technical and geo-environmental business has been recognised with a Gold award for the second year running, and Hydrock Consultants has achieved its first.
