Geospatial (GIS) Analyst

An exciting opportunity has emerged for an enthusiastic Geospatial (GIS) Analyst to join our successful Geo Division. This is a fantastic opportunity to work as part of an integrated project team of geo-environmental and geo-technical specialists to deliver, enhance, and innovate our GIS capabilities. 

Candidates would benefit from working at either our Bristol or London office (to work alongside our existing GIS team) but we welcome applications from candidates based at any of our UK offices.

Geo is one of Hydrock’s core disciplines – its where we come from (both our CEO and MD have a Geo background!) You’ll be joining an experienced and successful team of engineering geologists, geo-environmental and geo-technical specialists who work collaboratively with other divisions across the organisation.

What will you do as GIS Analyst? 

As a GIS Analyst you will be responsible for the implementation of GIS driven delivery and innovation within our Geo division. Your responsibilities will include:  

1. Make the role your own: This is an exciting opportunity to develop new ways of working. Collaborate with teams to inspire and develop improved ways of working that enhance our services and empower our engineers to focus on their creative work. 
2. Process Improvement: Develop internal business processes to ensure we continuously improve and analyse data to provide valuable business insights. 
3. New Services: Work with a variety of teams to create new market focused products that provide higher margin, game changing services. 

You’ll be set up for success if: 

We are looking to speak with candidates who are both technically minded and people orientated. This role requires independent work and liaising with both internal and external stakeholders – strong communication skills and being persuasive are essential for this role. You will also have experience within:  

• Assisting with the delivery of GIS project work and implementing standards/geographical libraries. 
• Capturing and analysing a range of geographical data using GIS systems with experience of using platforms such as MapInfo, QGIS and ArcGIS. 
• Ordnance survey mapping and digitising techniques. 
• Using and manipulating complex geo-databases. 
• Harnessing APIs from a range of sources and using programming languages such as Python. 
• Integration between GIS and existing software platforms (such as Civils 3D CAD). 
• Numerate with experience of statistical analyses. 
• Knowledge of UK and international survey datums and grid systems. 

Experience in a number of the areas below would also be beneficial to the role, although it is acknowledged that you may not have experience in all of these aspects.

1. Remote Sensing: Understanding satellite, drone, or aerial imagery and the tools/techniques used for analysing such data.
2. Spatial Analysis Techniques: Beyond basic GIS functionalities, understanding advanced spatial statistics and geoprocessing methods can be valuable such as RStudio.
3. Cartographic Principles: Ability to design and produce clear, user-friendly maps that effectively communicate spatial information.
4. Web GIS and Online Mapping Platforms: Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS Online or Carto, to share and visualize spatial data on the web would be beneficial.
5. Database Management Systems (DBMS): Understanding relational databases like PostgreSQL (with PostGIS), or others can be beneficial for managing large geospatial datasets. 
6. Geospatial Data Standards and Formats: Familiarity with various geospatial data formats (like GeoJSON, Shapefile, KML) and standards (like WMS, WFS).
7. LiDAR Data Analysis: As LiDAR becomes more commonplace, skills in processing and analysing this type of data are increasingly valuable.
8. Surveying and GPS: While this might overlap with some of your mentioned skills, a deeper understanding of surveying principles and GPS technology can be beneficial, including field-based GIS experience
