Principal/Senior Environmental, Permitting & Assessment Consultants

Nuclear Management Consultancy

Employment type

Full time

Contract type

This is an opportunity for a Senior or Principal Environmental Consultant to join our talented and growing national Nuclear Division. Recognising the current growth in the energy sector involving new nuclear power generation as well as the continuing management and development of existing nuclear sites and waste management facilities, we have immediate and exciting opportunities working closely with a number of client organisations on a range of permitting and land quality related projects. We have worked hard to develop trusted and close working relationships with these clients, who come to us for strategic advice and delivery of critical elements of their programmes. We are looking to find talented and motivated people to expand our team, and to help support and lead environmental and land quality projects.

You will be based in our Glasgow office, working alongside a wide representation of Hydrock’s other services and disciplines. We work flexibly and are moving to hybrid-working, so you can balance your time and commitments in a way that works for both you and Hydrock. However, we are really focused on hiring great people, so would be open to discussing a range of options in terms of geographic location and split of time in offices.

We offer our staff the opportunity to work with clients and to develop skills and professional networks, whilst helping us deliver our vision of being at the forefront of the UK’s new nuclear programme. We pride ourselves on empowering staff and supporting them to develop their own niche within our growing team. Our work focuses on developing close and mutually beneficial relationships with our clients and then delivering strategic and impactful outputs tailored to their needs. We don’t typically place staff on long-term secondments as we understand that developing as a consultant requires exposure to a range of work and clients. We also encourage and support our staff to develop their wider consultancy skills covering everything from commercial awareness, business development and work winning, staff development and more. However, we know everyone is different, so we focus on hiring great people and working with them to find the roles that support their skills and ambitions.

What you’ll be responsible for

Some of your primary responsibilities will include the following (not necessarily from the start):

  • Helping to manage and deliver environmental permitting work packages, including overseeing and supporting our delivery teams;
  • Build and support environmental permitting and land quality related services alongside other Hydrock Divisional projects to nuclear clients.
  • Continuing to build and develop excellent client relationships; this is where we have excelled and our clients have all expressed their appreciation of our approach to relationship building;
  • Delivering high-quality and bespoke technical and strategic support to our clients;
  • Supporting the continued development of our business, including through identifying, bidding for and winning new work, either with new or existing clients;
  • Mentoring and developing our graduates and other junior staff.

We know that every individual has different skills, strengths and preferences. We focus on recruiting great people and provide them with opportunities to tailor the role to best fit their skills and experience. Therefore, the bullets above are indicative but we avoid defining rigid roles.

What skills and attributes are we looking for?

The work we deliver for our clients in support of environmental permitting and licensing spans the early project lifecycle from feasibility to managing delivery, in which we provide bespoke strategic permitting advice to ensure compliance requirements are identified and considered at an early stage; as well as managing the assessments and evidence required to underpin permissions. The common focus being the ability to understand a problem and work out solutions to specific client needs.

Key understanding, knowledge and experience of the ideal candidate include, but are not limited to:

Understanding of:

  • UK regulatory and policy landscape for the permissioning of nuclear projects, including recent developments in policy and strategy;
  • Environmental management systems within a nuclear licensed company;
  • Environmental permitting interfaces with the nuclear site licensing and planning regimes.

Knowledge of:

  • Radioactive Substances Regulation and other key environmental permits scheduled under the Environmental Permitting Regulations;
  • Environmental Safety Case development;
  • Land quality management on nuclear licensed sites.

Experience of:

  • Working with UK Site License Companies and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (including its subsidiaries);
  • Waste characterisation and management;
  • Radiological risk assessment of contamination and behaviour in the environment.

Other skills and experience which we would consider beneficial to a consultancy role with us in:

  • Experience of working with nuclear new build and SMR programmes;
  • Experience of working with waste producers (e.g. Magnox, Sellafield, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd. (DSRL), and EDF Energy);
  • Experience working with Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) and its various work programmes;
  • Knowledge of international waste management and disposal practices;
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams and with communication with other technical disciplines;
  • Interactions with nuclear and environmental regulators;
  • Experience, or good understanding of working within a consultancy environment.

In addition to knowledge and experience, we are looking for someone who can provide the following:

  • Flexible, innovative and proactive approach to working and finding solutions;
  • Ability to work closely with clients to solve problems;
  • Desire to support growth of our radioactive waste management and decommissioning strategy capability.
