Hydrock has undertaken the detailed design for a new explosives storage and research facility at the Porton Down site.
The £17m facility consists of 12 explosive magazines, three process laboratories, an administration facility and all associated buildings and infrastructure.
It was essential that the entire programme of works was compliant with all current regulations, Joint Services Publications (JSP 440 and JSP 482) and Dstl/MoD Codes of Practice for various options of storage capacity and explosive types.
In addition to the blast modelling and the detailed building design, the scheme also included hardened buildings and structures, traverses, drainage roads, tracks and fences, and site-wide infrastructure including CCTV and security systems. We also undertook the planning application.
Hydrock was subsequently retained by BAM Nuttall to undertake detailed design services during the construction phase.
