Ben Bowler

Technical Director Renewables & Energy Consultant, Smart Energy & Sustainability

Truro

MEng (Hons), CEng, MIET

Ben is highly experienced in the electricity transmission and distribution sector with a background in research, innovation, project delivery, network operations and energy sector regulation.

He advises on the development of renewable energy, smart grids, storage and decentralised energy systems, helping address our client’s needs for decarbonisation, grid-capacity resilience, and income generation.

Ben joined us having been a Highly Specialised Senior Research Associate at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Switzerland for four years; he had previously worked extensively for Siemens, both on the National Grid electricity capital programme and on the development of offshore wind opportunities.

At Lucerne University, Ben was part of the Advanced Analytics and Intelligent Energy Systems research group. His work addressed research topics at the intersection between decarbonisation of energy systems, digitalisation, and the emerging fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Ben oversaw research that was close to commercial and practical implementation. He helped secure funding and led the execution of the projects. His work included optimisation of local energy systems, renewable energy integration, energy communities, vehicle-to-grid and eMobility, edge analytics and IoT.

Ben has contributed to research papers on subjects such as the AI marketplace for energy systems, and an IoT based PV array fault detection programme. In Swissinfo he was interviewed on how AI can help Switzerland shift to renewables, while at the EU Sustainable Energy Week in 2021, he delivered a workshop on the routes to market for micro generation grid services for both transmission and distribution system operators.
