Mark is our national healthcare sector lead and a senior director in our national MEP business.

As our healthcare subject matter expert, Mark’s ‘lived’ understanding of the needs and demands associated with managing complex estate-wide healthcare projects sets him apart. He’s also worked in other public sector contexts, including an in-house estates and facilities management role for a leading university in the north west of England.

With the industry’s urgent shift towards climate adaptation, Mark has increasingly concentrated on helping organisations with change management and implementation strategies in pursuit of their decarbonisation targets. Mark has a keen interest in the digital estate for smart operation and maintenance as well as reducing energy and carbon emissions.

Mark is an IHEEM registered authorising engineer in medical gases and an active member of the CIBSE Healthcare specialist group. He’s also a CIBSE project manager and, notably, a section author for the new CIBSE Healthcare Facilities Design Guide.

Among his notable project experience, Mark has been involved with the design concept for the new University Hospital Monklands in Scotland. His role covered the design of the medical gas infrastructure and the early development of the chilled water system and distribution philosophy together with the main heating design from air and water source heat pumps through to heat stations in each plant room. With the aim of being completed by 2028, the modern hospital aspires to be fully net zero carbon during both construction and operation.

Other projects include the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, where Mark was the project manager and mechanical lead on a facility consisting of five ultra-clean operating theatres, endoscopy, radiology and ward areas.

He also delivered the energy strategy feasibility report for Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which involved exploring several options for a net zero carbon energy centre to replace the existing gas fired boiler and CHP plant.

Mark’s international healthcare sector experience includes his role as the project manager and lead mechanical engineer for a 230-bed maternity hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. As a hospital in one of the poorest countries in the world, it demanded an economical solution to minimise the impact of costs without compromising clinical functionality of the hospital.

He has also played a lead design role in a number of world-leading life sciences developments, including Bruntwood City Labs and the Sir Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials.

Mark's exceptional achievements have earned him a prestigious position on the board of CIBSE for a three-year term, and in 2024, Mark was also elected Chair of the CIBSE Healthcare Group. This three-year appointment leads a committee whose aim is help CIBSE members understand the specific needs from building services in hospital and clinical environments, improving the performance of these facilities and supporting the implementation of the relevant standards.
