Hydrock’s fire safety experts support planning application for new R&A project in St Andrews

28th Nov 2023

The R&A, a leading body within the world of golf, has submitted a planning application to Fife Council for its proposed new staff building on the western outskirts of St Andrews.

The R&A has significant global responsibilities for golf and currently operates from five buildings at the home of golf. The new building would bring the majority of its staff together in a modern, purpose-built facility at the entrance to the St Andrews West Development, a short distance south of the A91.

Our team has provided fire engineering consultancy (RIBA stages 2–3) and developed the fire safety strategy.

St Andrews West is a large mixed-use development which is already home to the new Madras College and has land allocated for university and employment uses with planning in principle from Fife Council. The development is run by St Andrews West LLP.

The R&A has made a commitment to sustainability as a key component of the vision for the new building. It will be targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Subject to planning permission being granted, construction would start in August 2024. An 18-month build is currently anticipated with the new facility opening in April 2026.

The governing body will still be headquartered in The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse and its operations will continue at The R&A World Golf Museum, Allan Robertson House at Kingsbarns and its storage facility in Cupar.
