Landmark research building opens for business

6th Mar 2017

One Research Way, the 2,500 sqm state of-the-art building, which represents Phase Five of Plymouth Science Park, is now open.

Hydrock, as part of BAM Construction’s team, provided structural and civil engineering design for the building. As well as forming a key landmark at the front of the site, the new three-storey £6.5m building provides high quality facilities for science and technology businesses.

Key aspects of the project included:

  • Unique structural features within the glass and steel building such as cantilever breakout pods and a three storey angular atrium.
  • A sustainable, flexible design allowing different business unit configurations to meet future needs as they change.
  • An engineering design that was responsive to site constraints, reducing earthworks, minimising retaining wall structures and maximising the number of parking spaces.
  • Agreeing an alternative surface water drainage route with the Environment Agency and Local Authority, which saved approximately 200m of roadworks and reduced the flood risk.
